Migraines are not uncommon nowadays. You ask your friends or family members and you will come across quite a few number of people, who will admit that they have migraine. But, while there are many who do know and recognise their headache type as migraine, there are still many, who have no idea as to what migraine is. The basic reason behind this is their lack of knowledge regarding the symptoms of migraine. Hence, everyone must go through the common migraine symptoms, so that they do not ignore their headache type to be “just” a headache and rather approach the doctor for proper treatment.
Before you step into understanding what the migraine symptoms are, you must understand that these symptoms differ from stage to stage. Here is a categorical discussion of these symptoms.
Symptoms of migraine in prodrome stage:
The prodrome stage is the stage before a migraine attack. You will experience these symptoms before a day or two, that actually warn you against the attack. These symptoms include –
- Mood swings
- Craving for food
- Stiffness in neck
- Increased thirst
- Increased need to urinate
- Feeling extremely tired
You will suddenly experience a feeling of euphoria and you will go into depression almost instantly.
Auras as migraine symptoms:
It is at this prodrome stage, as well as during an attack, you will also experience some nervous system disturbances that can disturb your sensory, motor and verbal functions. These symptoms of migraine known as auras include –
- Seeing flashes of light, bright spots, zigzag lines, wavy lights
- Experience difficulty in speaking
- Temporarily lose vision
- Numbness and weakness in limbs
- A tingling sensation as if needles are being pierced into the arms and legs
- Hearing noises
These auras will last anywhere between 20 to 60 minutes and they will not affect every migraine sufferer. Only a percentage of the migraine sufferers encounter auras. But those who do get them find it really debilitating and unbearable to cope with. Auras are signs or symptoms that are typical only to a migraine headache. Identifying this makes diagnosis easy.
Symptoms of migraine during an attack:
The signs and migraine symptoms during an attack are the most difficult ones to bear. As migraines can affect even children, they find it really unbearable to cope with. What is even worse is that the pain will last a minimum of 4 hours and sometimes it can last for up to 72 hours. However, when this pain will attack cannot be predetermined. At this stage, you will experience –
- Throbbing pain on one side of head
- Pain in both sides of head and abdomen in case of children sufferers
- Blurred vision
- Feeling lightheaded
- Sensitivity to light, sound and smell
Symptoms of migraine in postdrome stage:
As the attack subsides, the migraine symptoms include –
- Sensitivity to light and sound
- Extremely weak, exhausted and drained out
You will experience these symptoms of migraine for about 24 hours after an attack has subsided. If you are experiencing these symptoms, see a doctor at once and the doctor will prescribe you the right medicines that will help you cope with the pain and manage it.
