An important part of setting up a website is finding a reliable web hosting service. There are many different services out there, and it can be difficult knowing which one to choose, since different websites will have different needs.
The following advice should make the selection process a little bit easier.
If you have a small to mid-sized company and want to cut hosting costs, you should go with a shared server. If you do not get lots of traffic or do not wish to have control over your server resources, then go with a shared host. Just keep in mind that you will be sharing CPU, disk space, and bandwidth.
When choosing a web hosting service, refrain from going with the recommendation of friends or family who are not professionals. Though they may have had a good experience themselves with a certain provider, realize that their needs may be very simple compared to yours. Read reviews and advice from those who have needs similar to your own.
You should keep a backup of your site on your computer or on a flashdrive. In case your web host is encountering major issues and you cannot have access to your data, you will be able to switch to another host by simply uploading your site to a different server.
Read the terms of your contract before subscribing to a web hosting service. You should look for a guarantee that your content will be updated right away when you upload it to your server. Remember that your visitors want up to date content and you will not be able to meet their expectations with a slow web hosting service.
Aside from selecting web hosting companies based on fewest outages, you should also make sure the web hosting company you choose automates your payments as well. If a company does not offer this, then that company is not worth using. Make sure you know what you are getting into, and choose wisely.
You should never pay in advance for hosting services. Many companies will offer you a discount to sign up for a longer term. What if the hosting company goes bust? Worse yet, what if you do not like something about the hosting company and wish to switch? It is better to pay as you go with web hosting.
Before choosing your web hosting service, determine whether or not you will need to use web templates. Many hosts will provide easy to use templates for building your site without the need for HTML knowledge or a professional designer. If you need this service, then choose a host that give a wide range of templates.
If you are just experimenting with web design, look for free web hosting services to get your feet wet. Although free services come with a number of limitations, if your website is purely experimental and recreational, this might not matter much to you. Go for a paid service when you decide that web design is something to which you want to commit.
Save yourself some money by upgrading your account with your web host to an annual plan. Most of the yearly web hosting plans cost less on a monthly basis than a pay as you go arrangement. If you are pleased with your web host, there is no reason not to upgrade to take advantage of these savings.
As you have seen, choosing the right web hosting service can mean the difference between success and failure for your website. Before you make this important choice, you need to do your research and know more about web hosting.
Remember what you have learned in this article, and the process should go more smoothly.
